A 72-year-old drunk driving suspect was arrested Sunday afternoon after an accident in the parking lot of the Kalua Beach Bar in Tavares.

Brenda McBride of Leesburg admitted to backing into another car in the parking lot, according to an arrest report from the Tavares Police Department. She initially told police she’d only had two drinks, but later admitted she’d had a total of seven drinks. She said she had planned to go across the street and stay at the Key West resort rather than trying to drive home.

The arresting officer determined that the parking lot where the accident occurred was not a safe place to conduct field sobriety exercises. He took her into custody and transported her to the Lake County Jail where she performed the requested exercises. At the end of the examination, McBride spontaneously said, “I already know I’m DUI.” She refused to provide a breath sample.

She was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and refusing to submit to testing. She was booked at the Lake County Jail on $2,000 bond.
