Leesburg police identify 18-year-old man gunned down outside convenience store

Kyser McKeever Luther

Leesburg police have identified the man killed in a shooting outside a Leesburg convenience store late Monday afternoon as 18-year-old Kyser McKeever Luther.

Officers were called to the Leesburg Supermarket, at 900 County Road 468, shortly after 5 p.m. and when they arrived, they found Luther dead inside a red Ford Mustang that was parked directly in front of the store.

Police said multiple gunshots were fired into the vehicle from outside, striking Luther at least one time in the head. Additional officers also responded to the scene, including Leesburg detectives and crime scene technicians from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Police believe a gray four-door sedan may have been involved in the incident and two black males seen near the Mustang at the time of the shooting are being sought for questioning. No other description of the vehicle or the men was available Tuesday.

Detectives are following incoming leads and seeking search warrants for various items related to their investigation, including the vehicle Luther was driving. Police are asking anyone with further information to contact Leesburg detectives at (352) 728-9862 or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477) to be eligible for a reward.

Luther was arrested in August after his vehicle was stopped for having an expired license plate. When Lake County sheriff’s deputies were speaking with him, they discovered that he had a loaded, unsheathed Kel-Tec .380-caliber handgun with an extended magazine under his driver’s seat.

Luther was arrested and charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, two counts of possession of heroin, possession of cocaine and carrying a concealed unlicensed firearm. He was released on $33,000 bond.
