Steve advised that he and Sergette were in a verbal argument over her asking him to cut the grass. He had an attitude and was being disrespectful, which angered her. She started throwing pots and pans, but he was able to dodge them, the report said.

He then grabbed Stergette to restrain her and protect himself. She lost her balance, and they fell to the floor with him still holding her. She bit and scratched him, and he let her go after she calmed down. He sustained scratches on his right hand, the report said.

When speaking with Sergette, she was visibly upset and crying. She corroborated that they were arguing over Steve cutting the grass. However, she added that he began touching her face with his finger and pushed her to the ground, the report said.

While she was on the ground, he picked up a cooking pot and threatened to hit her with it. She then got off the ground and picked up a frying pan to defend herself. Steve responded by grabbing her shirt and throat to throw her back on the ground, the report said.

Sergette could not breathe when Steve grabbed her by the throat. Once she was on the ground, he pushed her face into the ground and stepped on her hands to pin her down, the report said.

She sustained small cuts on the inside of her bottom lip, bruising on her hands and a scratch on the right side of her neck. Additionally, the kitchen was in disarray, with cooking pots and pans on the floor, the report said.

Sergette was arrested on charge of simple battery (domestic) and booked at the Lake County Jail. The native of Haiti was released on her own recognizance. She is responsible for appearing in court on July 28.

Steve was arrested on charge of battery by strangulation (domestic). He was released from jail after posting $5,000 bond.
