A Leesburg woman was arrested for battery after she allegedly “clawed” at her granddaughter’s face during an argument.
Officers responded to a battery involving 65-year-old Benita Lucille Mackie and her granddaughter at an undisclosed Leesburg residence around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 28, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

Mackie advised that her granddaughter hit her and pushed her down to the floor, causing her to hit her head. As she made her claims, she became verbally aggressive with the officers. She stated she wanted her granddaughter out of the house and threw some of her belongings on the ground outside, the report said.
She added that the argument started because her granddaughter left her door open the week before and let people inside her house when she was not home. She did not touch her granddaughter at all, the report said.
However, her granddaughter stated she was in the bathroom holding her 2-year-old daughter when Mackie began yelling at her. She shouted about how she left her door open the week before, resulting in numerous people entering the residence that day. Mackie got more aggressive and “clawed” her face with her right hand, the report said.
This left a scratch on her right eye lid, which appeared to be fresh. The granddaughter pushed Mackie to the floor to protect her child. At that point, Mackie grabbed her and her daughter’s clothes and threw them outside the house, the report said.
Although Mackie refused to clarify the length of time they lived together as a family, her granddaughter stated they had done so since November, the report said.
Mackie was ultimatelty arrested on charged of battery (domestic). The Illinois native was booked at Lake County Jail and released on her own recognizance. She is responsible for appearing in court on July 15.
