A New York man was arrested for retail theft after falsely scanning $374 worth of merchandise at Walmart.

A deputy responded to Walmart, located at 550 U.S. Hwy. 27, Clermont, on Thursday night for a theft incident involving 29-year-old Abel Sebastian Espinel Ruiz, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Surveillance footage showed he falsely scanned multiple items for $0.98. He did this by sliding a pack of cilantro seasoning across the scanner, replacing the barcode on other merchandise. He repeated this process with 47 items, consisting of groceries, hygienic and miscellaneous products, totaling $374.33, the report said.

Espinel Ruiz was then arrested on charge of retail theft and booked at the Lake County South District Jail. He was released after posting $500 bond.
