Lake Technical College has been recognized for its outstanding craftsmanship, taking home a top award in a statewide fabrication competition celebrating the United States of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
On Tuesday, June 23, Florida Department of Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas announced the winners of the Statewide Welding & Fabrication Challenge.
The initiative invited students from Florida’s public secondary and postsecondary institutions to design and create original metalwork inspired by the 250th anniversary of the United States.
While there were nine overall winners selected across the state, Lake Technical College took home the highly coveted Technical Excellence award within the Technical Colleges division.
The local college’s winning entry is a metal sculpture that features an eagle perched atop a large globe. The eagle is depicted holding a plaque reading 1776, paying homage to the nation’s founding year.
According to the state’s guidelines, all student submissions were designed to be durable, long-term installations. The sculptures are intended to remain on their respective campuses or within their communities as lasting commemorations of the historic milestone.
State officials noted that the competition serves as a testament to the hands-on training happening within local communities.
“As we recognize America’s 250th anniversary, this competition highlights the innovation and technical skills developing across Florida’s career and technical education programs,” said Kamoutsas. “These student projects reflect the hands-on learning experiences that are strengthening Florida’s workforce, preparing students for success in high-demand careers and positioning Florida as the national leader for workforce education.”
The winning programs highlight the strength of the state’s talent development initiatives. In recent years, the state has invested more than $12 billion in workforce education to expand opportunities for Floridians to gain training aligned with high-demand careers.
A key part of this ongoing effort is Florida’s growing apprenticeship system, which combines paid on-the-job learning with traditional classroom instruction. By connecting students directly with employers, these specialized programs create pathways for individuals to earn industry-recognized credentials while building the skilled workforce that businesses need.
