A Clermont man was arrested on drug charges after a K-9 sniffed out cocaine in his pocket during a traffic stop.

An officer stopped directly behind 32-year-old Collin Michael Dobovan at the intersection of Bloxam Avenue and Pitt Street around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Clermont Police Department.

After stopping at the stop sign, the vehicle accelerated rapidly to travel northbound on Bloxam Avenue. The officer drove behind the vehicle as it reached 45 mph in the 30-mph zone. The vehicle pulled away from him, increasing the distance as it went, the report said.

The officer sped up to keep pace and get an exact reading, but once he caught up, the vehicle approached an unrelated traffic stop and slowed down. Due to this, he could not get a reading. He still knew it was going over 45 mph, though, the report said.

After stopping the vehicle, he spoke with Dobovan, who could not provide insurance for the vehicle without calling a friend. He also admitted that he knew he was speeding, the report said.

A K-9 unit subsequently responded to the scene and alerted to the odor of narcotics. A check of Dobovan’s pockets yielded two bags of cocaine, the report said.

Dobovan was arrested on charge of possession of cocaine. The Michigan native was booked at the Lake County Jail and released after posting $2,500 bond.
