Betty Crenshaw (84) long time resident of Yalaha, Florida, beloved sister, Aunt, and friend, passed away at her home surrounded by her closest friends on May 3, 2026.
Betty will be remembered as someone who loved life. She cherished her family, all of her lifelong friends, her faithful caregiver and friend, Joette Haynes, and her two precious Dachshunds.
Betty Crenshaw was born on March 22,1942 in Dyersburg, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Allen Crenshaw and sister of the late Carolyn Crenshaw Perry of Brownsville, Tennessee. She attended the University of Memphis and graduated with a degree in Education. She began her career teaching at a private school in Missouri but soon moved to Florida where she taught at Leesburg High School for many years. She touched the lives of many students and was beloved by all. After retiring, she opened and operated BC’s General Store in Yalaha. The unique little store became a well-known hotspot for Tennessee BBQ. People came from all over to enjoy Betty’s secret BBQ sauce recipe. She served the seasonal orange grove workers, as well as, the very famous. Pictures covered the store walls of well-known figures.
Betty and BC’s General Store were also featured in Southern Living Magazine.
Betty loved people and had friends of all ages and culture. Her kindness and generous spirit touched many. Her closest friends were the,”Yalaha Bunch,” and they were often gathered together enjoying meals, watching Tennessee sporting events, sharing fellowship, and most of all, fishing at Horseshoe.
Betty cherished her family. She and her sister, Carolyn, were two years apart in age and born on the very same day. They shared a bond like no other. That bond also carried over to her niece, Cathy, and two nephews, Bill and Allen. Betty was always only a phone call away and they looked to her as their guardian angel, which will carry on even after her death.
Betty Crenshaw is proceeded in death by life partner, Suzanne Gorman of Hazzard, Kentucky, her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. James Allen Crenshaw, and her sister, Carolyn Crenshaw Perry. She leaves behind her niece, Cathy Powell (Mark), nephews, Bill Currie (Julia), Allen Currie (Cindy), step nephews, Kevin (Cindy) and Shane Perry, 12 great nieces and nephews, and 4 great, great nephews.
Betty wished to have a small family service to be determined at a later date. The family requests that any donations be sent to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
