An incident at Pine Meadows Conservation Area this week is serving as a reminder for Lake County residents to use caution around bodies of water as alligator mating season begins.

On Monday, an alligator attacked a cow within the conservation area, attempting to pull the animal into the water and causing severe injuries. Due to the extent of those injuries, law enforcement humanely euthanized the cow. An uninjured calf was transported to the Lake County Animal Shelter.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded and attempted to locate the alligator, but was unsuccessful. Traps have been set, and FWC personnel will continue efforts to capture the animal throughout the week.

Out of an abundance of caution, Pine Meadows Conservation Area will remain closed until the alligator is located and removed. Lake County will notify the public when the property reopens.

Alligator mating season in Florida begins in April with courtship, followed by peak mating activity in May and June. During this time, alligators are more active, making it especially important for residents and visitors to remain alert near water.
