A Leesburg man was arrested after being stopped with several cut straws in his truck.

A deputy on patrol spotted 47-year-old James Patrick Johnson driving a grey Ford pickup truck westbound on Wesleyan Way in Wildwood around 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. He was not wearing a seatbelt, leading to a traffic stop at County Road 153.

The deputy then asked for his license, registration and insurance. He handed over his license and looked for his registration, all while being fidgety and nervous. At that point, a K-9 unit arrived on scene to check for narcotics and gave a positive alert, the report said.

Johnson denied there being anything illegal in the vehicle and stepped out so it could be searched. The deputy subsequently located a blue cut straw with a crystalline residue and a green cut straw under the cup holder near the driver’s side, the report said.

He was arrested on charge of drug equipment (possess or use) and given a written warning for the seatbelt violation. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $1,000 bond.
