A Tavares man was arrested after a check of his immigration status confirmed he showed a trooper a fraudulent ID.

A trooper arrived at the scene of a traffic stop at Mile Marker 294 of the Florida Turnpike in Groveland at 6 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol. Following an inspection of immigration status, all four occupants, including 27-year-old Julio Perez Hernandez, were detained.

While law enforcement asked for IDs, Perez Hernandez showed a photograph of a permanent resident card. It seemed to be fraudulent based on the different layers of font and faded images, the report said.

A check with a United States Border Patrol agent determined he had no status in the United States and was identified as a VISA overstay with a removal date of April 21, 2020. Furthermore, there were no applications or proceedings found that would have resulted in him being issued a permanent resident card, the report said.

Instead, the trooper found an active warrant for his arrest out of Marion County for violation of probation on Aug. 7, 2025, the report said.

Perez Hernandez was arrested on charge of fraud (possess similitude ID card). The native of Mexico was booked at the Lake County Jail, where bond was set at $2,500 and a hold was placed on him for the active arrest warrant.
