A Leesburg woman will appear in court next week for skip-scanning $111 clothes and food-related items at Walmart.

Loss prevention associates of Walmart, located at 2501 Citrus Blvd., saw 66-year-old Cheryl Marie Lafaive skip-scanning merchandise on security cameras around 7:55 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, according to a case report from the Leesburg Police Department.

She put all of the items in her shopping cart and paid only for what she scanned. She then pushed the cart out of the store where she was stopped with $111.23 of stolen merchandise by loss prevention. These items included fleece tops and pants, paper plates, croutons, butter, lunchmeat, Lifesavers, bread, Kleenex, shrimp and Coca-Cola, the report said.

Lafaive later claimed she did not know she skip-scanned, and this was the first time she ever got in trouble, the report said. Despite watching a portion of the video of her doing so, she was insistent that she did not know and offered to pay for everything. This may have been reasonable if it had only been one or two items, but the associates recovered at least 18 things from her.

The Michigan native was ultimately issued a misdemeanor for retail theft and given a court date of Dec. 17.
