An officer responded to Kangaroo Express, located at 1331 W. North Blvd., regarding a well-being check around 11:30 p.m. Feb. 24, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. Dispatch advised that an employee stated a brown Ford truck was parked at pump five with a woman, later identified as 34-year-old Amber Mist Madden, passed out in the driver’s seat.

Upon arrival, the officer found the truck at pump five along with Madden slumped over in the driver’s seat. He parked in front of the vehicle for the safety of the business and multiple people standing outside in fear that waking the driver would send the truck forward into the gas station, the report said.

The officer got out of his vehicle and approached the driver’s side of the truck, seeing Madden still slumped over and drooling. He observed two Mike’s Hard alcoholic drinks in the center cup holder. He then tried to verbally wake Madden due to the window being down, but he was unsuccessful, the report said.

The officer opened the car door to conduct a sternum rub on Madden’s chest due to her being unresponsive. After doing so, she lifted her head, shoved his arm away, told him to go away and once again fell unresponsive. He then asked dispatch to have EMS respond, the report said.

Following another sternum rub, Madden woke up, and the officer asked if she had taken any substances or alcoholic drinks. She denied taking any substances before beginning to fall asleep again. When the officer woke her once more, she became extremely aggressive and combative. She swung her fist and hit the left side of his face, the report said.

The officer ordered Madden out of the vehicle, but she refused. He grabbed her left wrist to escort her out of the vehicle where she struck him again. Backup officers arrived to help take her out of the vehicle, during which she struck another officer in the chest and began to physically and verbally resist, the report said.

Meanwhile, a third officer entered the passenger side of the vehicle and removed the keys for safety. Madden grabbed ahold of his neck, bringing him closer to her before they fell backward into the backseat. While in a physical altercation there, she caused a laceration in two spots on his face. She also tried to bite the officer’s knuckles, the report said.

Madden was subsequently escorted out of the vehicle and handcuffed. She was still being extremely combative and aggressive, resulting in her being hobbled for her safety and placed in the back of a patrol vehicle, the report said.

An officer took Madden to UF Health Leesburg Hospital during which she spoke of wanting to shoot law enforcement officers and officers on site. While waiting for medical clearance at the hospital, she made multiple statements about wanting to stab the officers in the head, the report said.

A vehicle inventory was also completed due to the registered owner being arrested. There were two bottles of Mike’s Hard Lemonade, one of which was cold to the touch with condensation. There were two empty bottles of Fireball, as well, the report said.

Madden had slurred speech when law enforcement made contact with her, along with a flushed face and glassy eyes. She had a strong odor of alcoholic drinks coming from her person and her breath, the report said.

As for field sobriety exercises or breath tests, the information could not be collected because of Madden’s belligerent behavior. She refused to calm down and cooperate. She also refused to sign a citation for DUI after multiple attempts, the report said.

Additionally, while at the hospital, Madden stated she should be allowed to sleep in her car in her own driveway. Through multiple attempts, she did not understand that she was in the parking lot of a public business, the report said.

Madden was charged with three counts of simple battery on law enforcement officer, threat to law enforcement officer (death or bodily harm), DUI and refuse to sign citation. She was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $18,500.
