The last Winn-Dixie in Leesburg has been gutted in preparation for its conversion into a new Aldi.

This week, the facility at 27405 U.S. Highway 27 in Leesburg was emptied of merchandise, shelves, and the like as crews worked to clear the space.

The store, which was the last of its kind within Leesburg, officially closed for business on February 9.

The Winn-Dixie in Leesburg has been closed and is being converted into a new Aldi.

In the weeks leading up to its closure, the grocery store reduced its operating hours and sold off its remaining merchandise at discounted rates, with all sales final, according to staff.

The news of another Winn-Dixie being replaced by Aldi comes after similar reports on Villages-News.com and Ocala-News.com.

Earlier this month, Winn-Dixie stores that were not slated to be converted into Aldi locations were sold back to a group of investors. That group, led by C & S Wholesale Grocers, LLC, will likely keep the remaining 170 or so Winn-Dixie locations open.

Outside of Leesburg, Winn-Dixie currently operates locations in Tavares, Eustis, and Clermont in Lake County.
