John Henry Sink

John Henry Sink, 83, of Leesburg, Florida, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024. Born on January 22, 1941, in Kannapolis, North Carolina, he was the third of six boys in a family that instilled a deep appreciation for education and the outdoors. He graduated from Appalachian State University in 1962 where he played baseball and tennis.

John had a long, fulfilling career as a high school teacher and coach. He retired from Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, where he taught at Richard Montgomery High School for nearly 30 years. Before his years as a teacher, he worked as an accountant for the school system. But teaching was where his heart was. He was more than a teacher, he was a mentor, in and out of the classroom. John enjoyed his years as a high school coach for the baseball, golf, and football teams. He mentored countless players instilling in them not only skills on the field, but also values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. His passion for education and coaching was evident in the care and dedication he brought to his work, inspiring countless students to reach their full potential.

In addition, John was an avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer. He loved building and flying model airplanes, woodworking, winemaking, restoring cars, gardening . . . a tinkerer who loved working with his hands. As a fisherman, he took great pride in building his own fishing rods and tying his own flies. His craftsmanship and love for the hobby were shared with others as he often gave away his work to anyone interested in starting their fishing journey. His generosity and willingness to help others were just a few of the many ways he left a lasting impact on those around him. He found peace and joy in these activities, often spending time outdoors with friends and family.

John also volunteered his time and served his community. He served in many capacities at St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Derwood, Maryland. He was a member of the Lions Club, where he served as treasurer. Through the Lions Club, he dedicated his time and energy to various charitable activities. His work with the Lions Club made a positive and lasting impact, and he touched the lives of many.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Helen Gatchell Sink. Together, they shared a deep and lasting bond. He is also survived by his son, David Sink (Maggie) of Atlanta, GA, his daughter, Mary Ellen Jones of Herndon, VA (Ian), and three grandchildren, Colin, Corryn, and Ryan who were a constant source of pride and joy. He is also survived by three of his brothers, Charley Sink (Rita), Sam Sink (Judy), and Mike Sink (Shelby).

John had the biggest and kindest heart. His legacy of kindness, generosity, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be remembered for his loving spirit, generosity, and deep love for his family and friends.

A memorial service celebrating John’s life may be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in his honor.

Rest in peace, John. We love you very much and you will be greatly missed.
