A deputy responded to Walmart, located at 550 U.S. Hwy. 27 in Clermont, regarding a shoplifter in the loss prevention office around 1:03 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arrival, the deputy met with loss prevention personnel who advised that she observed 51-year-old Leslie Michelle Rickard skip-scanning merchandise and not scanning some at all. She was stacking items and only scanning once. Some items were put into Walmart bags on top of unpaid merchandise, the report said.
The self-checkout hostess tried to help Rickard, but she continued to skip-scan merchandise. She went to the grocery exit, passing all points of sale with no attempt to pay. She made a stop along with the door host who told her to step into the Loss and Prevention Office, the report said.
Rickard handed over all the unpaid merchandise once inside the office. The store wanted to prosecute for theft in the amount of $45.36, the report said.
While on scene, the deputy observed video surveillance of Rickard skip-scanning miscellaneous grocery items. She also placed Walmart bags over the unpaid items and passed all points of sale, the report said.
Rickard was arrested on charge of petit theft. The Colorado native was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $500.
