A Kissimmee man was arrested for petit theft after placing over $75 worth of auto part tools in his backpack and leaving Walmart without paying.
A deputy responded to Walmart, located at 550 U.S. Hwy. 27 in Clermont, regarding a retail theft around 12:32 p.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Prior to making contact with 21-year-old Darrell Davis, the Lake County Communications Center advised that the complainant said, “Someone just walked out. Will be a black male wearing a gray hoodie, black pants, beige shoes, wearing blue headphones and left on a red, blue and white bicycle.”
The complainant then advised that Davis was “headed towards the health clinic in the area while wearing a blue bookbag.”
While the deputy patrolled the area, he was on Cagan Ridge Boulevard when he observed a man that matched the description of the suspect. He was riding his bicycle on South Lake Commons Boulevard. The deputy stepped out of his patrol vehicle and commanded Davis to get on the ground, to which he complied. He was detained for further investigation, the report said.
Another deputy met with the complainant at Walmart. He advised that while conducting his duties as loss prevention for the store, he saw Davis by the auto parts. He saw him place his backpack on the side of the tool aisle, the report said.
The complainant watched Davis crouch and place auto part tools inside his backpack. He proceeded to walk around the aisle, grab his backpack, put it on his back and walk to the general exit, passing all points of sale without paying for the items, the report said.
The total amount of items stolen was worth $78.73. The complainant filled out an affidavit with intent to prosecute on behalf of Walmart, the report said.
The deputy confirmed that Davis was the suspect who took the items from Walmart. He then conducted a search incident to arrest, wherein Davis spontaneously uttered that in his backpack were auto part tools and that he was coming from Lowes. Once the backpack was opened, the deputy observed multiple Hyper Touch socket sets. These items were later returned to Walmart, the report said.
Davis was subsequently arrested on charge of petit theft. He was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $1,000 bond.
