An officer responded to 1201 Sunshine Avenue regarding the theft of a yard rake around 6:51 p.m. Saturday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. While en route to the residence, he drove past the Y-intersection of Sunshine Avenue and 13th Street and noticed a black SUV parked in the large concrete area. He continued to the residence, and the SUV followed suit.

Upon arrival at the residence, the SUV pulled into the lawn, and the victim of the theft got out of the driver’s seat. The officer briefly spoke with her, and she stated that her Ring Doorbell Camera notified her of motion. She checked the footage and noticed a man, later identified as 39-year-old Shawn Jermaine Brinson, rode a bicycle into her yard, took her leaf rake and left with it, the report said.

The victim got into her vehicle and called the LPD for assistance. She then followed Brinson to the wooded area near the Y-intersection of Sunshine Avenue and 13th Street, the report said.

The officer was able to view the Ring Doorbell footage and recorded it on his body worn camera while speaking with the victim. He obtained verbal intent to prosecute from the victim, and she told him the value of the rake was $29.99 at Lowes, the report said.

The officer then returned to the Y-intersection and approached a tent in the wooded area. While approaching the tent, he noticed a leaf rake and an individual matching man seen in the video who was identified as Brinson. The officer began to secure the rake and asked him to step out of the tent, the report said.

Brinson uttered that he was going to return the rake, and he only borrowed it. The officer secured him in handcuffs, during which Brinson said he could not believe he was getting arrested for borrowing a rake. He also stated that he noticed the Ring Doorbell camera on the victim’s residence and knew he was being recorded, the report said.

The officer was able to take photos of the leaf rake before returning to the victim. The investigation was also recorded on his body camera. Brinson was subsequently transported to the LPD for the booking process while another officer returned the rake got a written statement with intent to prosecute, the report said.

A criminal history check of Brinson revealed he had a petit theft conviction from May 9, the report said.

Brinson was charged with petit theft (one prior conviction) and transported to Lake County Jail. He was released after posting $1,000 bond.
