An Inverness man has his arraignment set for April 3 following his arrest on a drunk charge last month in Leesburg.
On the evening of Feb. 28, an officer responded to Steve’s Package and Lounge, located at 1302 S. 14th Street, to assist EMS with an individual later identified as 67-year-old David Allen Miller falling off his motorcycle, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.Â
Upon arrival, the officer activated his emergency lights and met Miller, who was sitting on his running motorcycle. Witnesses on scene informed the officer that Miller fell off his bike as he tried to drive out of the parking lot prior to arrival, the report said.Â
The officer then talked to Miller and observed him to have watery, glazed eyes and a strong odor of alcoholic beverages on his breath as he spoke. He provided his license upon request, which was used to identify him, the report said.Â
Due to preexisting medical conditions that did not allow Miller to complete field sobriety exercise, he was instead asked to perform seated exercises. He agreed and was seated in a chair on level ground in the parking lot. However, his performance during the exercises, including slurred speech, unsteady coordination and slow reflexes, led the officer to conclude that he was under the influence, the report said.Â
The officer secured Miller in handcuffs under suspicion of DUI and transported him to LPD for a breath test. Miller refused to submit to the test even after he was read a warning, the report said.Â
The Illinois native was charged with DUI and taken to Lake County Jail. He was released the following morning after posting $1,000.
