A 19-year-old Leesburg man with an expired marijuana prescription was arrested after Ziploc bags of the substance and some burnt roaches were found in his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Timothy Alexs Jones was charged with possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana and knowingly driving with a suspended license after being pulled over by a Lake County sheriff’s deputy on County Road 439 at around 7:08 p.m. Friday. The deputy observed a shirtless Jones driving a blue Chevy SUV without a seatbelt, according to the sheriff’s office arrest report.

The deputy thanked Jones for putting on his seatbelt after he was spotted and asked for his license, registration, and proof of insurance. While the deputy was waiting for the information, he observed a female in the front passenger seat, a male in the back seat and a small child in a car seat. The officer noticed the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, the report said.

After a short debate with the deputy, Jones finally produced a Ziploc bag of what he admitted was marijuana. He also provided another Ziploc bag with nine burnt marijuana roaches, according to the report.

Asked if he had a medical marijuana prescription, Jones said he did but didn’t have it in his possession. He also couldn’t explain why he had transferred it to a bag instead of keeping it in the prescription container. Jones said he was prescribed two and a half ounces a month but could not say on what date, the report said.

Jones said he last legally purchased marijuana some day last week. However, the deputy knew he was not being truthful because he ran Jones’ name through the marijuana registry and learned he last purchased 13.6 grams on April 24, and his most recent prescription had expired May 4, according to the report.

Due to the fact the marijuana was well over 20 grams (30.3 grams with the bag) and not legally prescribed, Jones was placed into custody. The deputy ran his license and discovered it was suspended with notice given earlier this month, the report said.

Jones was transported to the Lake County Jail and released after posting $3,000 bond.
