A Fruitland Park man was arrested for assaulting his ex-girlfriend after he allegedly threw a wrench at her car and broke the windshield.

Police responded to a verbal dispute at a residence located on 613 North Dixie Ave. around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department.

Officers were told that a male subject, 27-year-old Cody Scott Cosson, had thrown a wrench at the complaint’s vehicle, the report said.

Upon arrival, an officer met with the victim, Cosson’s ex-girlfriend, who was sitting in her green 2006 Ford Escape. Fresh broken glass was clearly visible on the hood of the vehicle, as was the freshly cracked windshield on the driver’s side top close to the frame. The wrench punctured the windshield, leaving a hole in the window and broken glass in the driver’s seat and dash area, the report said.

The victim advised she was at the residence to collect her belongings and was allowed to be there because her name was still on the lease agreement, the report said. She went inside to try to get her cell phone and other personal belongings when an argument arose between her and Cosson. She grabbed her keys to leave, after which she got in her vehicle and started backing out of the driveway.

However, Cosson followed her and picked up a socket wrench that was sitting on the porch. He threw it at the windshield of her car from 20 feet away as she was reversing out of the driveway. Cosson then went back inside the residence, the report said.

The officer subsequently spoke to Cosson, who was detained for officer safety based on a history of being aggressive with officers. He advised that the victim arrived at the residence shortly after he did, and she began harassing him as she banged on the doors and windows.

Cosson stated he asked her several times to leave, and she would not. At some point, the victim allegedly started opening vehicles and throwing paperwork. Cosson placed a dresser in front of the door to keep her from entering, the report said.

The officer asked Cosson several times if he threw any items at a vehicle, which he said he had not and had no idea how the damage was done to her vehicle. Although he denied causing the damage, he did offer to pay for the repair, the report said.

The wrench was found near the front door of the residence, which the victim was able to identify as the weapon thrown at her vehicle. There was a piece of glass imbedded in the groove of the handle, the report said.

Due to the circumstances, Cosson was arrested on charges of aggravated assault (domestic) and throwing a missile into an occupied vehicle. He was transported to the Lake County Jail with bond set at $12,000.
