A pregnant woman from Tavares and her male friend from Leesburg were arrested on drug charges after methamphetamine and paraphernalia were found on their mattress at a homeless camp.

On Thursday afternoon, an officer spotted 25-year-old Cassie Michelle Fisher and her friend, 31-year-old Sherman Eugene James III, at a homeless camp at 900 Stinson Street, according to arrest reports from the Leesburg Police Department.

Upon his arrival, the officer observed Fisher quickly leaving the camp and walking away from the mattress that James was still sitting on. Fisher immediately began asking if she was going to jail as the officer called James out of the camp, the reports said.

The officer asked the pair what they were doing in the camp. Fisher stated she was just there to meet with her friend, James, while he stated he was there to “hook up” with Fisher. Fisher later admitted to being pregnant and having consumed methamphetamine three days prior to this incident, according to the reports.

The officer asked James if there was anything in the camp or on the mattress that the officer should be aware of. James’ carotid artery visibly began to pump, and he glanced over to the area of the camp while saying, “Um, I don’t know.” His tone of voice became quieter and sullener after that question, the reports said.

This prompted the officer to search the mattress, which had a bright white sheet draped over it. The officer could see a red butane lighter sitting on top, and a clear plastic bag with a white crystal-like substance was adjacent to the lighter. Next to the bag was a clear glass pipe with burn marks and a whitish-yellow substance melted into the inside reservoir of the pipe, according to the reports.

Fisher and James were arrested and taken to the Leesburg police station for initial booking. While there, the substance in the bag tested positive for methamphetamine. The bag was weighed and found to contain around 0.7 grams of the drug, the report said.

The pair was charged with possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. They were transported to the Lake County Jail, with Fisher’s bond set at $1,500 and James’ at $3,0
