A defective tag light led to a Leesburg man’s arrest.

A Fruitland Park officer was on traffic patrol early Monday evening in the area of West Berckman Street and Rose Avenue when he observed a whiteFord pickup eastbound on West Berckman Street without a tag light visible from 50 feet away. The officer started to follow the truck and turned off his patrol car’s headlights to confirm that the license plate was not illuminated.

The officer initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, 22-year-old Andrew J. Espinosa, who told the officer that he did not have his license with him, but claimed it was valid. A records check revealed that Espinosa’ license had been suspended on March 23, 2021. He has had several driving while license suspended arrests and a total of nine citations within 36 months. The Puerto Rican native was placed under arrest for driving while license suspended and taken to the Lake County Jail. He was released after posting $1,000 bond.
