A man from Bogota, Colombia who does not have a driver’s license was arrested on a drunk driving charge in Leesburg.
A Leesburg police officer was on patrol Sunday morning in the 1500 block of U.S. Hwy. 441 when he noticed a blue Hyundai which failed to maintain its driving lane. Once the officer put on his emergency lights, the car continued to move forward at a reduced speed for a minute before turning into a store parking lot.
The officer made contact with the driver, 33-year-old Jonathan Moreno-Pinilla. A records check revealed that the citizen of Colombia did not have a driver’s license.
The officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol as he attempted to question Moreno through the car window. Moreno told the officer that while he could understand English he could only speak Spanish. Moreno was incapable of using the car’s parking brake as the car kept rolling backward. The officer removed Moreno from the car so that his backup officer could engage the parking brake.
A bilingual officer arrived to aid in the investigation. Moreno-Pinilla told him that he was traveling to his home in Eustis from a party at his fiend’s house. He said he was trying to get the attention of a friend who was in the next lane, causing him to drive out of his lane. He agreed to perform standardized field sobriety exercises, but did poorly, according to the arrest report. He was placed under arrest and taken to the Leesburg Police Department for booking. He refused to provide breath samples, but did give the police a urine sample. He was transported to the Lake County Jail and released after posting $2,000 bond.
