An 18-year-old Leesburg man was arrested on drug and weapon charges over the weekend after the vehicle he was riding in was pulled over for its tag light being out.

Trumaine Tyrese Burrows, of 20 Brook Circle, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, using or displaying a firearm during a felony, and possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana.

The Fruitland Park police officer who conducted the traffic stop Saturday night on County Road 486 near Urick Street smelled the distinct odor of green unburnt cannabis, as well as the slight odor of burnt cannabis. The officer also cold smell a strong odor of baby powder, which was possibly used to mask the odor of the marijuana, according to the police report.

The officer searched the driver of the vehicle and found a large wad of money in his pocket. The driver said the money was his and that it was approximately “two bands.” The driver became visually nervous and concerned when an officers told him they were going to search the vehicle, the report said.

During the search, officers found under the front passenger seat a black Taurus G2C 9mm handgun with a high-capacity magazine and a round in the chamber. Also under the seat was a baggie containing a large amount of a green leafy substance that later tested positive for about 28 grams of marijuana. Both the gun and the marijuana were positioned under the seat in way that appeared they were quickly placed there by Burrows, according to the report.

Burrows was arrested and taken to the Lake County Jail, where he was released the next morning on $9,000 bond. He’s due to appear in Lake County Court on July 25.
