A Leesburg teen with a gun was apprehended while allegedly attempting to burglarize cars in Eustis.
Officers chased down 19-year-old Casey Johnson on Thursday morning in the 2700 block of East Orange Avenue during an investigation into reports that cars were being broken into in the Brookshire neighborhood, according to an arrest report from the Eustis Police Department. Officers discovered that Johnson had a loaded Ruger pistol and a pouch containing a set of Southord Professional Locksmith Tools.
Johnson admitted under questioning that he had been attempting to open the doors of vehicles, but said he was unable to get into the cars. He told police that he did not even notice that one of the vehicles he tried to get into was a police car.
Johnson said he was accompanied by 18-year-old Matthew Hanners of Eustis who successfully broke into some vehicles.
Hanners was arrested later Thursday afternoon. Johnson claimed that Hanners had given him the locksmith tools that were found with the gun in his backpack.
Johnson was booked on multiple charges at the Lake County Jail with bond set at $33,000.
Hanners was also booked at the jail with bond set at $21,000.
