Driver killed after Lake County School bus turns into path of vehicle south of Leesburg

A driver was killed early Wednesday morning after his vehicle landed in a retention pond after colliding with a school bus south of Leesburg.

A 36-year-old Leesburg man driving a Toyota had been southbound at 6:40 a.m. on U.S. Hwy. 27 at Great Ecret Drive when the accident occurred, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The Lake County School bus carrying 17 students was traveling eastbound on Great Ecret Drive, attempting to make a left turn to travel northbound on U.S. Hwy. 27. The school bus made the turn, into the direct path of the Toyota. The front left of the Toyota struck the left rear of the bus. The Toyota traveled several hundred feet and came to rest in a retention pond.

The driver of the Toyota was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the school bus has been identified as a 64-year-old Bushnell man. He was not injured.

None of the students were injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
