Emogene Wheeler Stegall reached her heavenly home on Saturday, February 26, 2022. Her 95 years in this world was a blessing to her family, her church and her career partners. Born July 13, 1926, in New Salem, Mississippi. She was the second of 5 children born to hard working farmers and that is where she credits her work ethic.

Married Edwin H Stegall, February 6, 1947, and they had one daughter, Paula Stegall Stinson. Emogene and her family moved to Tavares, Florida in 1949 and this is where they planted their roots.

In 1958 she found her life’s passion when she went to work for Supervisor of Elections for Lake County. In 1972 the voters of Lake County elected her Supervisor of Elections and that is where she served until retirement in 2016. She was the longest serving elected official in Lake County history. She was a dedicated true public servant. She served the citizens of Lake County with honesty, integrity and fairness throughout her long career.

Faith and trust in her Lord and Savior, gave her strength and wisdom to face her challenges. She and her family have been an active part Tavares Methodist since 1949. Her Family says it will be hard to forget someone who gave us so much to remember.

She is survived by: Paula and Jim Stinson; Tammie, Logan and Griffin Vinson; Scott, Jenny, Cole, Brock and Ella Dre Stinson; Sister: Diane and Marcus Umfress, Fulton, Mississippi and brother: Frank and Betty Wheeler, Eustis, Florida. She was preceded in death by her Husband: Edwin H Stegall

She leaves a strong and meaningful legacy with lofty standards to her family, her friends and those that worked with her knew her throughout her long productive life. As one might expect….one of her final thoughts….never take for granted or miss your opportunity to VOTE!

Her family will celebrate her life at a graveside gathering in the days ahead. In lieu of flowers the family suggests you consider remembering her by donating to: Lake Sumter Children’s Advocacy Center, 300 S Canal St, Leesburg, FL, 34748 Cac4kids.org or your favorite charity.
