Leesburg Police Department detectives have solved a recent burglary at St. Paul’s Catholic School.
Police had been contacted on Nov. 8 by school employees who reported that several items had been taken from the school, including three pairs of walkie talkies, a chainsaw and several pieces of lawn equipment. The school administer provided the police with security video which showed a man breaking into the building.
In addition to the burglary at St. Paul’s Catholic School, there were a number of other burglaries which occurred in Leesburg. A burglary suspect in custody in a different case had pawned some items. Detectives went to Family Jewelry and Pawn in Minneola where store records showed that a man identified as 31-year-old Alex Winston Upshaw had pawned the items stolen from the school.
Detectives went to the Lake County Jail where they interviewed Upshaw, who confessed to the burglary and pawning the stolen items. He was charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure by forced entry, grand theft and organized theft and dealing in stolen items. Bond was set at $44,000.
