A man who allegedly pointed a gun at a woman was arrested early Saturday afternoon at the Deluxe Motel in Leesburg.
Leesburg police officers were dispatched to the motel after a woman called 911 seeking help. She told the dispatcher that 29-year-old Kamonte Phillips had pointed a gun at her and threatened to kill her.
When police arrived at the motel, Phillips fled on foot. Officers spoke with the victim who told them that she and Phillips were arguing about text messages from other men he found on her cell phone. Philips became enraged and started to strangle her and then took a pistol out of a silver backpack, started to load it and pointed it at her head from three feet away. He kept her from leaving the room as he continued to threaten her life. She was able to flee the room and call 911.
Police canvassed the surrounding area and located a silver backpack in the backyard of a residence next to the motel. In the backpack they found a semi-automatic handgun, marijuana in six baggies and four bottles which tested positive for cannabis.
Phillips was discovered hiding in another room in the motel. He spoke with police and confirmed that he had threatened and attacked the woman. A records check revealed that Phillips has a previous felony conviction.
He was placed under arrest on charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, aggravated assault with a firearm, domestic battery by strangulation, possession of controlled substances and unlawful restraint. He was booked at the Lake County Jail where he was being held without bond.
