An employee of a Leesburg medical office was arrested after allegedly double depositing her paychecks.
Advanced Gastroenterology & Surgery Associates on County Road 44 contacted the Leesburg Police Department after discovering that 38-year-old Vanessa Stevens of 1511 High St. in Leesburg had deposited two paychecks into two different bank accounts, one at Addition Financial bank and the other at Capital One Bank.
When the office accountant confronted Stevens, who had worked at the office since 2014, with the transactions, Stevens signed an affidavit stating she had never owned a Capital One account and had never had any contact with anyone from Capital One to open any account.
A Leesburg police detective was able to obtain a recording of a woman who said she was Stevens opening an account with Capital One. Her fellow employees were able to identify Stevens’ voice as they had worked with her for several years. The detective also obtained evidence from Capital One which included Stevens’ cell phone number, home address and account information. The records showed that a phone app was used to deposit the two checks into the Capital One Account on Dec. 7 and 15.
The detective obtained a warrant charging Stevens with fraud and grand theft.
Stevens turned herself in this past Thursday at the Lake County Jail. She was released after posting $13,000 bond.
