Anonymous donor gives $100,000 for technical education scholarships at LSSC

Students pursuing career and technical programs at Lake-Sumter State College have a new scholarship opportunity thanks to a $100,000 gift from an anonymous donor to the LSSC Foundation.

In addition to two- and four-year degrees, LSSC offers a growing number of shorter-term workforce focused credential programs designed to provide valuable and necessary skills to advance careers and get students working quickly.

“The LSSC Foundation is pleased to receive this gift in support of our rapid credentialing programs,” said Dr. Laura Byrd, Senior VP of Institutional Advancement & Executive Director of the LSSC Foundation. “This is the first gift in the college’s history for an endowed scholarship exclusively supporting students seeking to advance their career through career and technical education programs.”

The donor, a couple who are both lifelong educators in K-12 and higher education, wanted to make a gift in area where they felt its impact would be most significant to the students and the workforce.

“The job market in this area is especially hot right for skilled trades,” the donor said. “We are looking for these scholarships to set a strong foundation for successful and long-term careers.”

LSSC offers online and on campus credential programs in a wide variety of industries. Online course options include business, hospitality, information technology, real estate, and more. On campus courses include Commercial Driver License, Lineworker, child development, phlebotomy, and dialysis tech.

“As a key part of Florida’s workforce engine and a leader in Lake and Sumter counties for workforce training, we are continually looking at ways that we can support the needs of the workforce in collaboration with local employers,” said Byrd.
