John Long, who lives in the Eustis area, called the sheriff’s office to report that someone had run over his mailbox and destroyed it. He said he had purchased a new one but at 92 years of age wasn’t able to install it.

Long is Korean War veteran who served in the Army from 1951-53 and then enlisted in the Air Force. He retired to the Eustis area in 1971.

Sheriff’s Lt. Jason Kerley and Sgt. Tim Beary, who is an Army veteran, enjoyed speaking with Long and quickly took a liking to Long. They went the Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Leesburg and purchased all of the necessary items required to install Long’s new mailbox, and then took care of the problem for him.

“Mr. Long was so excited and thankful for their kindness,” a post on the Lake County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page says.
