Thirteen more local residents have succumbed to COVID-19 as Florida saw an increase of more than 6,000 new cases of the fast-spreading virus Wednesday.

Nine of the latest fatalities are residents of Marion County, three lived in Sumter County and the other one resided in Lake County. They are among the 1,623 tri-county area deaths, the 31,829 in Florida and the 518,458 across the country.

All told, Florida is reporting 1,924,114 cases – an increase of 6,014 from Tuesday to Wednesday. Of those, 1,888,725 are residents. A total of 81,379 COVID-19 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 31,044 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 31,829 deaths and 80,024 people have been hospitalized.

Locally, Lake County is reporting 24,481 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 97 in a 24-hour period. There have been 567 deaths and 1,297 people have been hospitalized.

Leesburg is now reporting 3,843 cases – an overnight increase of 12. Others have been identified in Clermont (6,504), Eustis (2,202), Mount Dora (1,876), Tavares (1,808), Groveland (1,670), Lady Lake (1,483), Sorrento (716), Minneola (713), Fruitland Park (676), Umatilla (640), Mascotte (494), Grand Island (319), Montverde (308), Astatula (190), Howey-in-the-Hills (186), Altoona (179), The Villages (169), Paisley (120), Astor (99), Yalaha (69), Okahumpka (49), Mount Plymouth (12) and Ferndale (8).

MARION COUNTY

  • Cases: 27,819 – increase of 69
  • Deaths: 815
  • Hospitalizations: 1,764
  • Cities with most cases: Ocala (20,438), Summerfield (1,742), Dunnellon (1,259), Belleview (1,197) and Silver Springs (580).
