7 more local residents succumb to COVID-19 as state tops 1.3 million cases

Seven more local residents have died of COVID-19 as Florida surpassed 1.3 million cumulative cases of the deadly virus on Wednesday.

Four of the latest fatalities were residents of Marion County, while two lived in Sumter County and one in Lake County. They are among the 877 tri-county deaths from the virus, as well as the 21,857 in Florida and the 340,956 across the country.

All told, Florida is reporting 1,306,123 cases – an increase of 13,871 from Tuesday to Wednesday. Of those, 1,283,701 are residents. A total of 64,450 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 27,312 in correctional facilities. Across the state, 62,508 people have been hospitalized.

Locally, Lake County is reporting 15,201 cases – an increase of 203 in 24-hours. There have been 295 deaths and 990 people have been hospitalized.

Leesburg is now reporting 2,420 cases – an overnight increase of 35. Others have been identified in Clermont (4,043), Eustis (1,233), Mount Dora (1,176), Tavares (1,154), Groveland (1,039), Lady Lake (837), Sorrento (412), Minneola (412), Fruitland Park (398), Mascotte (348), Umatilla (328), Montverde (200), Grand Island (177), Howey-in-the-Hills (121), Astatula (114), The Villages (96), Altoona (89), Paisley (62), Astor (57), Yalaha (42), Okahumpka (28), Ferndale (8) and Mount Plymouth (7).

TRI-COUNTY AREA

  • Cases: 37,603 – increase of 417
  • Deaths: 877
  • Hospitalizations: 2,689

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 4,951 – increase of 62
  • Deaths: 120
  • Hospitalizations: 377
  • Areas/cities with most cases: The Villages (2,042), Coleman (731), Wildwood (670), Bushnell (544) and Oxford (282).

MARION COUNTY

  • Cases: 17,451 – increase of 152
  • Deaths: 462
  • Hospitalizations: 1,322
  • Cities with most cases: Ocala (13,114), Summerfield (991), Dunnellon (752), Belleview (689) and Silver Springs (299).
