2 more local residents die of COVID-19 as tri-county area shows jump in cases

Two more local residents have died of COVID-19 as the tri-county area continued to show a steady increase in cases on Wednesday.

One of the latest fatalities was from Sumter County and the other one was from Lake County. They were identified by the Florida Department of Health as:

  • 66-year-old Lake County man who tested positive Oct. 31; and
  • 81-year-old Sumter County man who tested positive Oct. 16.

Lake County is now reporting 9,360 cases – an increase of 48 from Tuesday to Wednesday – among 4,318 men, 4,855 women, 67 non-residents and 120 people listed as unknown. A total of 726 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 277 in correctional facilities. There have been 238 deaths and 773 people treated in area hospitals.

Leesburg is reporting 1,527 cases – an increase of seven in a 24-hour period. Others have been identified in Clermont (2,376), Tavares (824), Eustis (755), Mount Dora (709), Groveland (637), Lady Lake (408), Minneola (248), Mascotte (238), Sorrento (215),  Fruitland Park (212), Umatilla (191), Montverde (141), Grand Island (97), Astatula (70), Howey-in-the-Hills (68), The Villages (44), Astor (42), Altoona (40), Yalaha (36), Paisley (35), Okahumpka (18), Ferndale (5) and Mount Plymouth (3).

Below is a breakdown of other COVID-19 activity in the local area:

TRI-COUNTY AREA

  • Cases: 23,923 – increase of 103
  • Men: 10,789
  • Women: 12,881
  • Non-residents: 110
  • People listed as unknown: 143
  • Deaths: 689
  • Hospitalizations: 2,179

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 3,108 – increase of 12
  • Men: 1,763
  • Women: 1,314
  • Non-residents: 14
  • People listed as unknown: 17
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 225
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 803
  • Deaths: 89
  • Hospitalizations: 300
  • Area/cities with most cases: The Villages (842), Coleman (716), Wildwood (478), Bushnell (360, 136 of which are at the Sumter Correctional Institution among 90 inmates and 46 staff members) and Oxford (152). The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting 138 cases among 32 inmates and 106 staff members.

MARION COUNTY

  • Cases: 11,455 – increase of 43
  • Men: 4,708
  • Women: 6,712
  • Non-residents: 29
  • People listed as unknown: 6
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 1,134
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 2,254
  • Deaths: 362
  • Hospitalizations: 1,106
  • Cities with most cases: Ocala (8,635), Summerfield (472), Belleview (412), Dunnellon (407) and Citra (202). A total of 1,425 cases have been reported among inmates (1,318) and staff members (107) at Lowell Correctional Institution and Marion Correctional Institution.

All told Florida is reporting 858,012 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 5,838 from Tuesday to Wednesday. Of those, 846,321 are residents. A total of 52,743 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 25,104 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 17,512 deaths and 51,115 people have been hospitalized.
