Two more local residents have succumbed to COVID-19 as Florida showed its biggest single-day increase in the number of new cases of the deadly virus in two months.

The latest fatalities were residents of Marion County and were described Sunday by the Florida Department of Health as:

  • 78-year-old woman who tested positive Sept. 2; and
  • 54-year-old woman who tested positive Oct. 14.

All told Florida reported 843,897 COVID-19 cases Sunday – an increase of 6,820 in a 24-hour period. That marked the biggest single-day increase in new cases since Sept. 1 when 7,560 new positive results were reported.

Of the total cases in Florida, 832,525 are residents. A total of 52,248 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 25,000 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 17,333 deaths and 50,489 people have been hospitalized.

Lake County is now reporting 9,195 cases – an increase of 63 from Saturday to Sunday – among 4,235 men, 4,772 women, 67 non-residents and 121 people listed as unknown. A total of 724 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 275 in correctional facilities. There have been 235 deaths and 762 people treated in area hospitals.

Leesburg is reporting 1,510 cases an increase of six in a 24-hour period. Others have been identified in Clermont (2,326), Tavares (815), Eustis (740), Mount Dora (695), Groveland (626), Lady Lake (401), Minneola (247), Mascotte (238), Fruitland Park (208), Sorrento (203), Umatilla (189), Montverde (140), Grand Island (97), Astatula (69), Howey-in-the-Hills (67), The Villages (43), Astor (41), Altoona (40), Yalaha (36), Paisley (35), Okahumpka (18), Ferndale (5) and Mount Plymouth (3).
