LSSC Foundation receives $23,000 for student scholarship programs

The Lake-Sumter State College Foundation has received $23,130 from the Florida College System Foundation for three student scholarship programs.

“We are appreciative of the generosity and leadership of the Florida College System Foundation for facilitating these scholarship programs on behalf of our students at Lake-Sumter State College and all FCS schools,” said Dr. Laura Byrd, VP of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director, LSSC Foundation. “These scholarship programs enable us to increase support to underserved and first-generation students toward achieving their dream of earning a college degree.”

Teresa Borchek, vice chair of the FCS Foundation, and Tim Morris, treasurer of the foundation and a member of the LSSC District Board of Trustees, presented the check to the LSSC Foundation on behalf of the FCS Foundation last week.

The FCS Foundation facilitates these scholarship programs on behalf of all 28 colleges in the Florida College System:

  • Bank of America Dream Makers Scholarship – awarded to first-generation students for tuition, fees, books, transportation and childcare.
  • Helios Education Foundation First Generation Scholarship – awarded to scholars who are first-generation students to cover their tuition, fees, and books. Preference for this scholarship will be given to students who intend to become a teacher in Florida.
  • Florida Blue Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship – awarded to students pursuing a degree in nursing and covers tuition, fees and books.

This year, the LSSC Foundation already has awarded more than $700,000 in scholarships to Lake-Sumter State College students – an all-time record as students cope with the economic impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
