One more local resident has died of COVID-19 as new cases in the tri-county area and across the state slowed significantly on Monday.
The latest fatality lived in Lake County and was identified by the Florida Department of Health on Monday as a 75-year-old man who tested positive Sept. 12. It was unclear from the report exactly where he lived in Lake County.
On Monday, the tri-county area reported just 20 new cases of COVID-19, while only 738 new patients were identified across the Sunshine State. That marks the lowest number of new cases across the state in several months.
Lake County is now reporting 7,475 cases – an increase of nine from Sunday to Monday – among 3,435 men, 3,869 women, 51 non-residents and 120 people listed as unknown. A total of 595 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 261 in correctional facilities. There have been 190 deaths and 577 people treated in area hospitals.
Leesburg is reporting 1,231 cases – an increase of one in a 24-hour period. Others have been identified in Clermont (1,871), Tavares (740), Eustis (594), Mount Dora (588), Groveland (512), Lady Lake (295), Mascotte (230), Minneola (206), Sorrento (167), Umatilla (155), Fruitland Park (149), Montverde (115), Grand Island (79), Astatula (61), Howey-in-the-Hills (49), The Villages (33), Yalaha (32), Altoona (32), Astor (31), Paisley (26), Okahumpka (16), Ferndale (5) and Mount Plymouth (3).

All told, Florida is reporting 701,302 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 738 from Sunday to Monday. Of those, 692,962 are residents. A total of 46,440 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 22,721 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 14,207 deaths and 43,606 people have been hospitalized.
