Police identify 54-year-old pedestrian killed in Leesburg on Monday night

The name of the pedestrian who was killed in Leesburg on Monday night has been released.

Joseph Meister, 54, was struck and killed shortly after 10 p.m. at the busy intersection of U.S. Hwy. 27 and Griffin Road. His name was released by the Leesburg Police Department on Wednesday morning after his next of kin had been notified of his death.

Meister was hit by a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by an 18-year-old man, also of Leesburg. An initial investigation by police showed that Meister walked into the path of the pickup, a report says.

After the incident, Meister was transported to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. The crash remains under investigation by the police department’s traffic unit and witnesses are being asked to contact them at (352) 787-2121.
