Two Lake County residents among latest 11 local victims of COVID-19 virus

Eleven more local residents have died of COVID-19 as the deadly virus continues to strike Leesburg and surrounding communities.

Eight of the fatalities were from Marion County, while the other one was a Sumter County resident. They were identified Wednesday by the Florida Department of Health as:

  • 78-year-old Marion County woman who tested positive July 23, hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with someone else suffering from the virus;
  • 92-year-old Marion County woman who tested positive Aug. 10, hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient;
  • 56-year-old Marion County woman who tested positive Aug. 12, hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient;
  • 69-year-old Marion County man who tested positive Aug. 14, hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient;
  • 85-year-old Marion County woman who tested positive Aug. 17, hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient;
  • 88-year-old Marion County man who tested positive Aug. 17, hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient;
  • 95-year-old Marion County man who tested positive Aug. 19, hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient;
  • 92-year-old Marion County woman who tested positive Aug. 25, hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient;
  • 85-year-old Lake County woman who tested positive July 22; and
  • 77-year-old Lake County man who tested positive July 24; and
  • 67-year-old Sumter County man who tested positive June 26, hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient.

Overall, Lake County is reporting 6,163 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 41 – among 2,851 men, 3,153 women, 38 non-residents and 21 people listed as unknown. There have been 98 deaths and 370 people have been hospitalized.

The majority of Lake County cases – 1,578 – have been reported in Clermont, followed by 953 in Leesburg and 677 in Tavares. Others have been identified in Eustis (510), Mount Dora (447), Groveland (437), Lady Lake (236), Mascotte (198), Minneola (175), Sorrento (144), Fruitland Park (130), Umatilla (127), Montverde (96), Grand Island (66), Astatula (47), Howey-in-the-Hills (38), Yalaha (28), The Villages (28), Astor (25), Paisley (25), Altoona (24), Okahumpka (16), Ferndale (5), Mount Plymouth (3) and Deer Island (1).

TRI-COUNTY AREA

  • Cases: 16,077 – increase of 139
  • Men: 6,956

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 1,742 – increase of 18
  • Age range of victims: 1-99
  • Median age: 58
  • Men: 866
  • Women: 857
  • Non-residents: 9
  • People listed as unknown: 10
  • Deaths: 47
  • Hospitalizations: 204
  • Area/cities with most cases: The Villages (484), Wildwood (328), Bushnell (266), Coleman (223) and Oxford (107).

MARION COUNTY

  • Cases: 8,172 – increase of 80
  • Age range of victims: Under 1 to 106 years of age
  • Median age: 42
  • Men: 3,239
  • Women: 4,855
  • Non-residents: 15
  • People listed as unknown: 63
  • Deaths: 156
  • Hospitalizations: 711
  • Cities with most cases: Ocala (6,439), Summerfield (325), Belleview (299), Dunnellon (267) and Citra (157).

All told, Florida is reporting 608,722 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 3,220 from Tuesday to Wednesday. Of those, 602,113 are residents. There have been 10,872 deaths and 37,404 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State. Those numbers show 155 more deaths since Tuesday and an additional 366 people requiring hospital care.
