Lake County man dies in crash after trying to outrun law enforcement

A Lake County man died in a fiery crash after trying to outrun law enforcement early Saturday morning in Citrus County.

The Mount Dora man was fleeing law enforcement when his Jeep Cherokee struck the Crystal Oaks Subdivision sign in Lecanto.

The 41-year-old Mount Dora man was driving a Jeep Cherokee at 1:35 a.m. when he fled at a high speed from a Citrus County sheriff’s deputy who attempted to initiate a traffic stop on State Road 44 in Lecanto, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. The deputy deployed stop sticks east of County Road 491.

The fleeing driver’s vehicle continued over a median and hit a light post. The vehicle continued traveling and struck the Crystal Oaks Subdivision sign and then erupting in flames. The driver suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash.
