A Leesburg resident earned gold at the 2026 National Veterans Golden Age Games, an annual multi-sport competition for U.S. military veterans.
Nelson González, a retired U.S. Army combat veteran, proudly represented the Orlando VA Adaptive Sports Program at the NVGAG, held in Tampa from June 27 to July 2. This marked his fifth year participating in the competition, an event that brings together veterans age 50 and older from across the country for camaraderie, competition and the opportunity to challenge themselves through adaptive sports.
Because archery was newly added as a medal competition this year, González had the opportunity to return to a sport he has loved for decades. He occasionally trained with his vintage 1975 Hoyt Pro Medalist take-down Olympic-style recurve bow.
“Rebuilding a consistent training routine became a rewarding journey in itself,” said González.
At the games, González earned the gold medal in the Archery Recurve Freestyle with sights category for the 65-69 age division, using his same vintage bow. The outdoor event was held at the University of South Florida Research Park Fields. Despite the intense heat and humidity, every arrow made the effort worthwhile for González.
Archery is more than a sport for many veterans. It offers focus, peace and therapy. For those with military or law enforcement backgrounds, the discipline of target practice can feel familiar, drawing on concentration and control in a quieter, more calming way.
“The silent moments of drawing, aiming and releasing an arrow can create a deep sense of inner peace,” said González. “That blend of sport, discipline and art is why archery can play such an important role in improving quality of life.”
