Lake Technical College recently hosted its first-ever manufacturing and engineering field trip for high school students in Lake County.
The college welcomed 35 students and faculty from South Lake High School and Umatilla High School for a trip focused on these two career pathways. Designed to connect classroom learning with real-world opportunities, the experience introduced students already enrolled in related high school coursework to advanced training options available through LTC’s Advanced Manufacturing & Production Technology and CNC Production Specialist programs. Each program can be completed in just six months and is designed to build directly on the foundational skills students are developing in high school.

In addition, high school students have the opportunity to dual-enroll in these programs tuition-free, allowing them to get a head start on industry certifications and in-demand careers while still completing their high school education.
To extend learning beyond campus, students also participated in industry visits with leading local manufacturers. South Lake High School students toured Hunter Agricultural Irrigation in Clermont, while Umatilla High School students visited Vibrant Ingredients in Eustis. These immersive tours provided a firsthand look at modern manufacturing environments and the wide range of careers available in the field.

From engineers and scientists to industrial maintenance technicians and CNC machining operators, students experienced the breadth of opportunities within the manufacturing sector and how their current studies can lead directly into high-demand, high-skill careers.
“This is what true workforce alignment looks like: education and industry working side by side to show students what’s possible. We’re not just talking about careers; we’re helping students step directly into them,” said DeAnna Thomas, executive director of LTC.

This inaugural field trip was made possible through the generous support of the Jerry and Lisa Brown family, who built successful careers in manufacturing and are committed to inspiring and encouraging the next generation of skilled manufacturing professionals.
LTC looks forward to continuing and expanding this initiative, strengthening partnerships between education and industry, and preparing students for rewarding careers in advanced manufacturing.
