A woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run Friday morning on U.S. Hwy. 27 in Leesburg.
At about 12:10 a.m., officers with the Leesburg Police Department were dispatched to conduct a well-being check in the area of U.S. Hwy. 27, just south of Singletary Park. Upon arrival, they located a deceased pedestrian, 40-year-old Ashleah Hayes, in the roadway near the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 27 and English Road.
Preliminary investigation indicates that an unidentified gray Hyundai sedan traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 27 struck Hayes and left the scene before officers’ arrival. Hayes was crossing the highway at the time of the collision and sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Northbound lanes of U.S. Hwy. 27 were closed for around three hours during the investigation.
