A Center Hill man was the second to be identified and arrested for giving a false name during a traffic stop.
William Joal Anhalt, 40, was one of five people stopped in a black Ford Expedition on Micro Racetrack Road around 11:25 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department.
The occupants, including 27-year-old Mary Elizabeth Squire, did not try to get away but took a short while to pull over near Cato Ranch Road. A K-9 unit then responded to the stop, and after a positive alert, officers began to search the vehicle for narcotics. They ultimately found cut and burnt plastic straws, strips of tin foil with burnt residue and tightly coiled pieces of Brillo pad, the report said.
They also found a brown wallet tucked behind the glove compartment that contained cards belonging to Anhalt. When questioned about his identity, he had given a false name that did not match what was written on the cards. The officers pulled up a picture of the person related to this name, and Anhalt stated it was his little brother, the report said.
They next advised that they would be fingerprinting him, to which he asked if it was necessary. A few moments later, the officers confirmed Anhalt’s identity. A check of his criminal history revealed eight active suspensions, including a revocation on Sept. 3, 2025, for being a habitual traffic violator. He had seven prior convictions for driving with a suspended license, as well, the report said.
The officer asked Anhalt what had taken him so long to stop, and he stated it was because the music in the car was so loud. He claimed that a passenger had accidentally turned on the hazard lights when trying to turn it down, the report said.
Another passenger was asked what happened inside the vehicle when the officer turned on his emergency lights. He stated that Anhalt was upset that he was being pulled over and told them that he was going to run because he did not have a license. A woman in the car convinced him to stop and took the key out of the ignition to prevent him from fleeing, the report said.
Anhalt was arrested on charges of driving while license suspended (habitual), providing a false name to law enforcement officer and failing to obey a law enforcement officer. He was booked at the Lake County Jail with bond set at $9,000.
