A Leesburg man was arrested after admitting to taking “Xanax” before drifting across the road.
An officer saw 34-year-old David Charles Clancy change lanes without using a turn signal in the area of U.S. Hwy. 27/441 and South Grays Airport Road around 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department.

His black BMW then wove back and forth, appearing to cross in front of two vehicles in the left and right lanes before coming back to the center. When the officer caught up, the vehicle continued to drift back and forth within its lane. The officer ultimately stopped it in the parking lot of Phillips Collision, located at 3320 U.S. Hwy. 27/441, the report said.
Clancy looked dazed when speaking with law enforcement, greeting them with “good morning” and slow movements. He stated he was trying to get home but was very tired. He did not know where he was coming from other than that he dropped a friend off “at the house,” the report said.
While speaking, his speech was very slow and thick-tongued. He agreed to get out of his vehicle but walked slowly. He also swayed until he leaned on the push bar of a patrol vehicle. He denied drinking and instead said he took “Xanax” about two hours prior, the report said.
Clancy subsequently agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises. His performance, including shuffling his feet and losing his balance, led the deputy to conclude he was under the influence. He later agreed to provide a breath sample that came back with 0.00g/210L. He also gave a urine sample, the report said.
He was arrested on charge of DUI and issued a written warning for failure to maintain a single lane. He was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $1,000 bond.
