Two Lake County teens died in a crash after attempting to pass in a no passing zone.

A 16-year-old Groveland girl was at the wheel of a 2008 Toyota Scion at 6:05 p.m. Saturday southbound on State Road 33 approaching Groveland Farms Road when she attempted to pass another vehicle in a no passing zone, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

She entered the northbound lane, into the lane of travel of a northbound 2021 Lincoln Aviator driven by a 75-year-old Lakeland man.

The teen driver attempted to swerve back into her lane, but lost control and re-entered the northbound lane, traveling back into the direct path of the Lincoln Aviator. The Lincoln Aviator struck the teen’s vehicle, causing it to overturn.

The teen driver and her 17-year-old male passenger from Clermont were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 6-year-old passenger from Lakeland traveling in the Lakeland man’s vehicle was seriously injured and taken to an area hospital. The Lakeland man and two other passengers, a 66-year-old Lakeland woman and a 5-year-old Lakeland boy, suffered minor injuries and were also taken to an area hospital.
