A Clermont woman will appear in court for allegedly skip-scanning $254 in food and other items at self-checkout register in Walmart.
A deputy responded to Walmart, located at 550 U.S. Hwy. 27, Clermont, for a retail theft involving 37-year-old Stephanie Bernstein around 2:25 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, according to a case report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
An asset protection associate advised that he had seen Bernstein skip-scanning merchandise through surveillance cameras. She then tried to leave the store without paying for 48 items worth $254.28, including several packs of ground beef, fruit cups, Diet Pepsis and more. However, the associate confronted her before she got too far from self-checkout, the report said.
Bernstein later admitted that she knew she had skipped items but was unaware of how many or what they were worth, the report said.
The Massachusetts native was ultimately issued a misdemeanor for retail theft and given a court date of Oct. 1.
