A Leesburg man was arrested on drug charges after an officer found containers of narcotics on the path he took to flee from law enforcement.
An officer observed a silver Toyota Highlander, with 52-year-old John Edward Robinson as a passenger, turn north on County Road 468 around 1:10 a.m. Monday, July 7, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department.
Immediately after turning, the vehicle made an illegal U-turn in the middle of the road to head south on County Road 468. It then pulled halfway off the road. The officer turned his headlights on and began to drive toward the vehicle, at which point Robinson got out to walk on the road, the report said.
The officer then turned on his emergency overhead lights and ordered Robinson to come to him. He started to flee on foot instead, going east on Myer Avenue. The officer noticed he had several things in his hands when he got out, the report said.
The officer chased Robinson on foot as he ran through the yard of 2247 Myer Ave., then north on the right shoulder of County Road 468. He ultimately caught up in front of 2240 Marcella Way and put Robinson under arrest. He no longer had anything in his hands, the report said.
Robinson walked back to the intersection of County Road 468 and Myer Avenue, where a probable cause search of his person was conducted. Two rectangular plastic containers were found in his front right pant pocket. They had plastic baggies inside with fentanyl and methamphetamine, the report said.
The officer proceeded to search the path Robinson took to flee and found a black zipper container with a glass smoking device. There were multiple containers with narcotic residue, as well as a Bluetooth speaker, a Robinsons hat, sunglasses and a cellphone, the report said.
Robinson was charged with resisting officer without violence and possession of methamphetamine, fentanyl and drug paraphernalia. He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $7,000.
